Prime Minister Says Reforms Only Way Forward
Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke about the importance of National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 during the inaugural session of the Governors' Conference. The President of India Mr. Ram Nath Kovind also graced the occasion.
Prime Minister said, the new National Education Policy (NEP) doesn’t belong to any one government but to the entire country, and it should be implemented in letter and spirit irrespective of the government in power.
He laid stress for wide-ranging discussions in the country on policy implementation, the Prime Minister said that the awareness amongst students, teachers and parents about the NEP should be as comprehensive as the stakeholder consultation that led to the drafting of the policy itself. The key to NEP’s success, he said, lies in stakeholder involvement.
Mr. Modi said, “It is equally important that our awareness (about the NEP and its provisions) should be as deep and wide-ranging as the consultation process. It’s important to discuss all the provisions and nitty-gritty of this document. It can only be implemented once all doubts and questions in people’s minds are addressed”.
When we move towards change, it’s natural for doubts and questions to arise in people’s minds. Parents may wonder how the move to dissolve subject streams would affect their child’s future. Teachers may want to know how the curriculum for such studies will be designed. Stakeholders could have questions about availability of adequate resources to meet the objectives of the NEP, the Prime Minister observed. He requested all the Governors present at the conference to hold virtual events till September 25 in their respective states to improve the understanding of the policy among the stakeholders.
The Prime Minister credited the wide-ranging consultation undertaken by the Education Ministry in the drafting stages for the NEP’s acceptance in the country. He further highlighted provisions of the NEP on exposure to vocations. He said that practical training or vocational training at a young age would help and enable to make India atmanirbhar (self-reliant).
To make India atmanirbhar, it’s important for our youth to be skilled. Vocational exposure at a young age and practical learning will help them become employable and this will also increase our share in the global job market, Mr. Modi said. “The new National Education Policy also talks about tackling brain drain. If the world’s best universities come to India then students will not want to study abroad. Also, our universities will become more competitive with the entry of foreign universities,” Prime Minister remarked.
Mr. Modi said that the more we learn and understand the various aspects of the New National Education Policy the clearer and easier will be its implementation, execution and acceptance. He said that the policy has been devised and moulded over a period of three to four years prior to which immense thought process and research as well as ideas and resources were poured into structuring and strategizing the present Education policy model.
Prime Minister addressed the fact that all over the country the National Education Policy was being discussed, debated, viewed and reviewed which will prove to achieve a healthy and successful implementation as well as have a positive impact on the nation’s educational goals.
Prime Minister said, reforms are the only way forward and will benefit not only the present but was also future generations in its approach and scope. He said that the National Education Policy of India will become the founding pillar of the twenty first century India and also take it forward into a new era. The policy will ensure our youth is ready for the future, he further added that faster education reforms will enable our youth to learn fast and in a more all-encompassing manner.
The National Education Policy includes as well as benefits everyone in its scope and has no bias whatsoever. Prime Minister said, the reforms introduced comply and further enhance the requirements of the fast changing times and the dynamics of the social, political and economic challenges.
