Prime Minister Says: India Ready To Reform, Perform & Transform

Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the India Global Week 2020 through video-conference. The distinguished delegates included politicians like Dominic Rabb, the British Foreign Secretary and Priti Patel, British Home Secretary; entrepreneurs and people from various walks of life. Prime Minister appreciated India Inc Group for organizing the event. Mr. Modi said, these events have helped bring the opportunities in India to a global audience. He appreciated the links between India and UK that have become stronger.

Prime Minister observed, in these times, it is natural to talk about revival. It is equally natural to link global revival and India. There is faith that the story of global revival will have India playing a leading role. Mr. Modi said. The world has seen the contribution of India's talent-force.

Indian professionals, doctors, nurses, bankers, lawyers, scientists, professors, our hard-working labourers have played a leading role. No one can forget the Indian tech industry and tech professionals. India’s ability to reform and rejuvenate is great. Indians are natural reformers! History has shown that India has overcome every challenge, be it social or economic. India has done so with a spirit of reform and rejuvenation. The same sprit continues now. The Prime Minister said

India is fighting a strong battle against the global pandemic; with an increased focus on people's health, India is equally focussed on the health of the economy. When India talks of revival it is revival with care, revival with compassion, revival which is sustainable - both for the environment and the economy; observed Mr. Modi.

Prime Minister said, in the past six years, India has made great gains in areas such as Total financial inclusion, Record housing and infra construction, Ease of Doing Business, Bold tax reforms including the GST, Roll out of the world's largest health care initiative - Ayushman Bharat. These gains have set the foundations for the next round of development initiatives.

India is already seeing green-shoots when it comes to economic recovery. In this time of a pandemic, Indian government has provided relief to the citizens and undertaken deep structural reforms. The government is making the economy more productive, investment friendly and competitive. The Prime Minister observed

The government’s relief package has been smart and targeted to provide the most poor with the most help. Thanks to technology, every penny has reached the beneficiaries directly. The relief includes, providing free cooking gas, cash in the bank accounts, free food grains to millions of people and many other things. As soon as India unlocked, the Centre launched one of the world's largest public works program to provide employment to millions of workers. This will not only re-energise the rural economy, but also help in creation of durable infrastructure in the rural areas.

India remains one of the most open economies in the world. Prime Minister said, government is laying a red carpet for all global companies to come and establish their presence in India. Very few countries will offer the kind of opportunities that India does today. There are many possibilities and opportunities in various ‘sunrise’ sectors in India. Our reforms in agriculture provide a very attractive investment opportunity to invest in storage and logistics. India is opening the doors to investors to come and invest directly in the hard-work of our farmers.

Prime Minister Modi said reforms have taken place in the MSME sector. There are investment opportunities in the defence sector. With relaxed FDI norms, one of the world's biggest militaries invites global companies to come and make products for it. India's tech and Start-up sector is vibrant. There is a market of millions of digitally empowered, aspirational people.

Mr. Modi observed, the pandemic has once again shown that India's pharma industry is an asset not just for India but for the entire world. Vaccines made in India are responsible for two-thirds of the vaccination needs of the world's children. Today also, our companies are active in the international efforts for development and production of COVID-19 vaccine.

Prime Minister said, 1.3 billion Indians have given the call for an Atmanirbhar Bharat. A self- reliant India. Atmanirbhar Bharat merges domestic production and consumption with global supply chains. It is about being self-sustaining and self-generating. India will pursue policies that promote efficiency, equity and resilience.

India is ready to do whatever it can to further global good and prosperity. This is an India that is reforming, performing and transforming. This is an India that offers new economic opportunities. This is an India that is adopting a human-centric and inclusive approach to development.

Military Build-Up In The Persian Gulf

In response to the attack on two oil tankers in the Gulf of Oman last week; the US Department of Defence announced that it is sending an additional 1,000 troops to bolster security in the Persian Gulf. This comes amidst the escalating tensions in the region following US decision to withdraw from the Iran nuclear deal (Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action or JCPoA) in May 2018. The US also re-imposed economic sanctions on Iran and last month ended all waivers for Iranian oil imports. President Donald Trump further decided to impose new sanctions and warned of secondary sanctions on individuals or entities doing business with Iranian industries under sanctions. Iran too had responded with warning other signatories of the JCPoA, especially UK, France and Germany, to do more to ease the impact of sanctions on Iranian economy failing which Tehran will be forced to retract from the deal. Pakistan’s Crippling Financial Crisis

As if the turmoil due to terrorism was not enough for Pakistan, it is facing fresh spate of demonstrations against unprecedented inflation that is putting the already crippling economy out of gear. Inflation is expected to rise to double-digitssoon. The major reason for this has been the steep rise in food and energy prices that has had a cascading effect on the process of other commodities. Pakistan’s imports are increasing and Foreign Exchange reserves have fallen to just about $8 billion; this is just enough for meeting payment obligations for two months.
