Pakistan Hits A New Low
In an unprecedented move, the Pakistani establishment right from its’ President to the Foreign Minister, commented on a matter that is absolutely internal to India. The unanimous verdict by the five judge bench of the Supreme Court of India on 9th November, 2019, settled the centuries old Ayodhya land title dispute in Uttar Pradesh for the construction of a Ram temple. This has been widely welcomed by all sections of the society. The bench also allocated five acres of land at a prominent place in Ayodhya to be identified by the Union government and the state government for the construction of a Mosque. The disputed land is to remain with a Trust to be formed by the Union government within three months.
The settlement of the land title in Ayodhya has been welcomed by all parties in the dispute. Expressing his deep satisfaction at the judgment, Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his address to the nation, the same evening said the manner in which every section of Indian society, every community, people of every religion, the entire nation have accepted the verdict with open heart is a manifestation of India’s age old ethos, culture, traditions and its inherent spirit of brotherhood and harmony.
A jittery Pakistan, however passed unwarranted and uncalled for comments on the unanimous judgment on Ayodhya land title dispute. New Delhi not only promptly retorted to the comments made by Pakistan but also hit hard on Islamabad’s nefarious designs. India’s Ministry of External Affairs in a statement said, ‘Pakistan’s lack of comprehension is not surprising as it is their pathological compulsion to comment on India’s internal affairs with the obvious intent of spreading hatred, which is highly condemnable’. Responding to a statement by the Pakistan Foreign Office and comments by its Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi, the External Affairs Ministry said, India sternly rejects the unwarranted and gratuitous comments on the Supreme Court verdict on a civil matter which is completely internal to India and pertains to rule of law and equal respect for all faiths and concepts that are not part of Pakistan’s ethos.
It was also most unfortunate that Pakistan chose to make comments about the situation in Kashmir and the Supreme Court verdict on Ayodhya at the pious occasion of the inauguration of the Kartarpur Corridor connecting the two most revered historic Shrines, Dera Baba Nanak in Gurdaspur district of Punjab in India with Gurdwara Darbar Sahib at Kartarpur in Narowal district of Pakistan. Speaking at the Kartarpur Corridor inauguration ceremony on the Indian side, Prime Minister Modi praised Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan for his understanding and respect for the sentiments of the Indians.
However, Pakistani leaders chose to rake up Kashmir and Ayodhya at the event on their side. The relations between India and Pakistan are frozen since the terrorist attack at Uri army camp in 2016, deepening further by Pakistan’s reaction on revocation of Article 370, integrating fully Jammu and Kashmir with India. However, the opportunity to reduce the chill, offered by the goodwill generated by Kartarpur Corridor was lost when Pakistan aggravated the situation further with its unwarranted comments over the Ayodhya verdict.
Pakistan is presently facing a deep economic crisis with Imran Khan under serious threat to his authority and competence to steer the country out of the mess. Thousands of activists of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam, JuI (F) led by its Chief Fazlur Rehman had gathered in Islamabad demanding resignation of the Prime Minister. The other opposition parties are also up in arms against the Pakistani government. The former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s party PML (N) and his family have accused the Pakistani government of trying to finish their party.
According to analysts, Prime Minister Imran Khan is perhaps keeping the anti-India rhetoric on a high pitch to divert peoples’ attention from serious domestic problems. But, Pakistan must understand that relations with India cannot improve unless it stops instigating terrorism and interfering in India’s internal matters.
